PS3 Review: Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure

I’m here with yet another video game review today. Not only that but a little giveaway for you as well.

Today we’re talking about Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure. You may remember I did a write up of the second game, Skylanders Giants a bit ago. Well, I finally got my hands on a copy of the first one! I am stoked~

I’ll start by saying that I totally lucked out with this game. Not only was I able to use a few of my existing figurines with this game, the Spyro piece that came with the game works with Giants! So we officially have all our pieces to play and fully complete the game(s).

Skylanders

The gameplay was pretty much the same all around in the first game, with a few tiny things here & there being the exception, like how you go about putting keys into locks. You also aren’t on a ship. You have to play through each level to re-assemble a piece of ancient tech to get Skylands working properly again and stop “The Darkness” from taking over the world. It totally helps that my high level character’s pretty much decimate anything I come across. I even went so far as to buy new figures to play through with!

One thing with this game that’s pretty interesting is that you can buy level figures. Toys that you place on the portal and it gives you a whole new level to play through. They did this with Giants, but instead of levels it gives you arena battle’s. It gives kids (or adults) an entirely new place to explore when they’re done with the initial game. That can’t be a bad thing. ^^

PS3 Review: Skylanders Giants

Skylanders GiantsI recently got into Skylanders with my son. Now, I’m a total gamer so naturally it looked interesting to me and it blew my eight year old’s mind so we had to have it. I had originally seen & wanted the Spyro version which was the “first” game, but we shop exclusively at Gamestop and they didn’t have the Spyro starter pack. So we just grabbed the next best thing… Skylanders Giants.

Technically this game is an “expansion”. I put that in quotes because (and this may be due to the fact that I didn’t get to play the first one) this one seems like it’s own game. Separate from the other. The idea of this one being an expansion though is a little odd to me. I play Warcraft and any expansion I’ve experienced on there was a downloadable, literal expansion to the game. It added content to what I already had. Hence my… yea… moving on!

Just to give you the jist of this game, here’s a vid to check out. Don’t watch it with your kids though… they’ll beg!

So you have rally your Skylanders to save the world from an evil midget. He’s so goofy looking though it’s adorable! Dream Works comes to mind… But back to the game!

The game cannot be played w/out the “Portal of Power” (which means you can’t go out and just buy the game itself), which allows you to transport your Skylander straight into the action just by placing it on said portal. You can get the game in a starter pack which is the game, the portal and three starter figures but if you already have the portal from the previous game you can just buy the Portal Owners Pack (no I’m not trying to sell you anything, I’m explaining in case you’re a noob).

Skylanders - HexEach character/figurine you play in the game (which come separately at 10-15$ a pop) has an element which makes it stronger or weaker against certain monsters during your adventure. That element also allows you to gain access to certain areas of the game that you can’t get into with any other character. And the Giants have their own uses as well and aren’t just a massive playable character. Certain areas require a giant for access. So you kinda need to eventually buy one figure per element and at least one Giant (if you don’t have one yet). But what’s most interesting about these things is that each Skylander saves it’s own information using the memory chip inside it. It saves it’s levels, it’s money, it’s upgrades and free’s your system up for other data. Awesome ♥

It’s a cute game and it’s a lot of fun to play. By looking at it you probably think, “Oh this is a kids game!” but actually it’s pretty awesome for all ages. I’m always getting asked to play and I’m having an great time with it.

There are a few things that bug me about the game though. One is the multi-player mode. You’re tethered to each other and fighting over which way to go and what to get first kinda sucks. It ends up being like a tug-of-war and who ever wins, the other person gets transported in that direction. Not so bad I guess but it bugs me. The other is “dying”. You don’t really die, your Skylander gets tired and you have to replace it with another while it rests. We actually went through all of our characters the other night. You only get back full health when/if you finish the level with your remaining character and make it back to “home base”.

It’s amazing how popular this game is and how well it’s doing. And Disney is getting in on the action as well with their new game, Disney Infinity, which is pretty much the same idea. Only… Disney-fied. Can’t wait to play that one too ^^ I totally recommend this game though. It comes in several platform versions including iPhone/iPad!! Seriously, check it out if you haven’t yet.

Have you/your children played Skylanders yet?

3DS Review: Tales of the Abyss

Tales of the AbyssI wouldn’t call myself a big gamer, but I do enjoy the time I have with my PS3 and farting around in World of Warcraft on my computer pretty much every day. And I seriously miss being able to play any of the Final Fantasy series on my PS2 (it’s kinda old and feeble and can’t even spin a disk anymore).

But I got myself a brand new pink 3DS for Christmas this past year and I absolutely love it. It’s so much better than my DS Lite (also pink). For one the screens are bigger, it’s 3D (which isn’t really true it’s more like a hologram with depth) but the kicker is it can play 3DS and non-3DS games! I absolutely love backwards compatibility~

So with all this awesomeness happening, I went out and bought a few games for it. I’m an RPG fan and when I saw Tales of the Abyss sitting on the shelf, it was a must have! I’ve played the Tales games before and loved them, so there was no doubt about this one. All mine!!

Now this game is actually a port to the 3DS from the PS2 (interesting) which means that I basically played only the important parts of the game and possibly missed all the juicy bits in between. It’s all good though. It was a hell of a lot easier to get through on the DS than it would have been on the console, especially with no codes (’cause I’m a cheater like that).

For being on a smaller pocket console the graphics in the game were amazing. One would expect something like that to diminish with a port to that size, but they kept the quality. It wasn’t crystal clear but I thought it was good enough. And the cut scenes were stunning as well. It was like you were actually watching an anime. So cool~ I also liked the fact that I didn’t really have to sit there and read anything. Most of time the characters actually spoke, so I could watch what was going on instead of missing out due to scrolling text.

Tales of the Abyss

The story though, to be honest, could have used a little more info. That’s probably just me, but I felt there were too many secrets and riddles to figure out and one or two things didn’t really get explained (or maybe I wasn’t paying attention…). I’ll use Jade for example. He was full of “hmm” and “ahh” and “I wonder” and “I’ll explain when I’m absolutely sure”. But why? It never told you. Which probably means even he never figured it out… Seriously? Kinda lame if you ask me. But if I’m missing something, please, tell me!!

One of the major things I love about the Tales games that I’ve played (Abyss & Graces) is the free roam/attack battle system, something no other game I’ve played has actually accomplished. Damn slacker developers…

Tales of the Abyss

This system allows you to move freely around the battle field and attack your target(s) as you wish. You can get behind them to cast your spells, knock them down to interrupt theirs. It made the final boss battle a lot easier. You don’t have to sit there and wait your turn while you take damage and waste your items trying to keep your party alive. You can avoid attacks as well as block incoming damage. So I hereby demand the Final Fantasy series adopt this system because it would make our gaming lives so much easier!

So to end, I can’t really say anything bad about this game. Some hardcore gamer’s might find something to bitch about (as usual) but I really enjoyed playing it. I don’t think I’ll be picking it up again any time soon due to the fact that it was a long game and the second time around it makes you play on a harder level unless you start a brand new game. Yes, it has many play-through’s. I recommend it highly to any RPG fan if you haven’t played it yet.
